A Year of Making, Part One!

So, I’m only an occasional blogger. That’s because I’ve been super busy this year trying to do too many things at once, as always.  Here’s a wrap up of my year in making!

Maker Faire Pittsburgh!

Pittsburgh had its first-ever Maker Faire in October of this year, and my second graders, the 4th and 5th grade art classes and my afterschool maker club kids teamed up to create our Mythological Monster Mashup Project.  After studying stories and creatures from Greek Mythology, they created their own robotic monsters that incorporated many of the elements found in the mythological creatures.

They used Hummingbird Robotics to bring these monsters to life. The Hummingbird folks liked our project enough to include it on their curriculum website!  In art class, the 4th and 5th graders imagined products those monsters might have needed, and made their own “Monster Mercantile” full of these mostly hilarious toiletry items for robotic monsters.  Each of their projects had to contain at least one circuit with a motor or light.

It was tremendously exciting for us to show all this off at Maker Faire.  Here are a few pics:
